SPATIO TEMPORAL INVESTIGATION OF LAND USE AND LAND COVER CHANGE IN ANYIGBA AND ITS ENVIRONS KOGI STATE NIGERIA

ABSTRACT:This study is aimed at investigating land use change in Anyigba from remotely sensed data in relation to its spatio-temporal dynamics. Efforts were made to examine the drivers of land use change, the rate of change; the direction of land use change and environmental effects of land use change trends between 1990 and 2019. The pattern of land use change was determined through imagery interpolation and overlaying to determine the land use change direction and extent of expansion. Findings revealed the existence of unguided expansion in growth of the town which affects the pattern of land use. It was also observed that there was incompatible conversion in land uses. The results further reveal that in between 1990-2019, built up area gained by 463.6% while light vegetation shrunk by 54.86%, dense vegetation was reduced by 48.6%. Due to changes in land use in the study area, uncultivated land or baresurfaces also shrunk in 2019 by 47.9Km2. The study recommends effective zoning strategy on unguided nature of urban development in the study area
