Optimizing NPK Fertilizer to Maximize the grain yield for maize at Asaba South South Nigeria
In the Sub-Sahara African region, the average grain yield for maize is generally low. This low yield is attributed to improper fertilizer formulations available to farmers. This study therefore seeks to evaluate the application of NPK fertilizer to maximize the grain yield for maize. Three NPK components namely Urea, Triple superphosphate (TSP) and Potash were mixed according to a simplex lattice mixture design and subjected to field testing with a view to generate data for analysis. Design expert 7.01 software was used to carry out the analysis. The special cubic model came out tops, with a reliability plot (R2=0.9506), having the least standard deviation of 0.36, Adjusted R-squared of 0.9082, and the least PRESS of 8.66. It is recommended, with a desirability of 90.20% that a blend of Urea, TSP and Potash in a ratio of 0.456:0.387:0.357 by weight (kg) (NPK: 17-14-17), maximizes the grain yield for maize. This blend of NPK will promote maize production and harness the potential of the maize crop for food and for industrial use.
