EFFECTS OF EFFLUENTS DISHARGED FROM ABUJA SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT ON WATER QUALITY OF RIVER WUPA FCT NIGERIA

  ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT:This study was carried out to analyse the effects of effluents from Abuja Sewage Treatment Plant on water quality of River Wupa, the study employed Experimental research design while drawing specifically from the “before-and-after experimental design”. A total of twenty (20)watersamples were collected from five stations (2km upstream to serve as control, Point of Entry, 2km downstream, 4km downstream and 6km downstream) along the river course, in the peak of rainy and dry seasons for two years (2019 and 2020). The water samples taken were analyzed for pH, Temperature, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Turbidity, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD-5), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Coliform, Faecal Coliform, Sulphate, Ammonium, Chloride, Nitrate, Nitrite, Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Total Solids (TS), Colour, and Total Alkalinity.Field observations revealed that water from the River Wupa is used for domestic and other non-consumptive domestic uses.The physico-chemical and bacteriological parameters were all determined according to procedures outlined in the Standard Method for the examination of water and wastewater (APHA, 1998) and the mean values of the samples revealed that all parameters of water quality tested and compared between the upstream and downstream remained significantly unchanged and fell within WHO limits except for the Total Coliform and Faecal Coliform count which read 2000CFU/100mL and 600MPN/100ml respectively against the WHO limits which are 400CFU/100l and 200MPN/100ml respectively.
