COMMUNITY HEALTH ASSESSMENT STUDY ON AN OPEN DUMP SITE NEAR A SURFACE WATER IN KOGI EAST NIGERIA

  ABSTRACT
Abstract:The available water sources throughout the world are becoming deplete and this problem is aggregated by the rate at which population are increasing especially in developing countries. This has brought into focus the urgent need for planned actions to manage water resources effectively for sustainable development. The problem of water scarcity is urban area is of particular concern with increasing global change pressure (urbanization, climate change, Technological change etc.) The study focus on community health assessment of an open dump site at Ojofu on Oganaji River. The study adopts survey research design. Both primary and secondary data sources were used for the study. The secondary data were gathered from existing report, and journals while the primary data were collected by means of questionnaire, oral interviews and community meeting as well as focused grouped discussion (fCDS). The major survey instruments: questionnaire survey and FCDs were used in data collection at Ojofui Open dump site areas, the environmental impact assessment (EIA) was conducted for this site and reported in this paper. The questionnaire survey covers five neighbourhoods, which includes; Oganaji (0.3km), Agudoko (0.3km), Ojofu (0.9km), Obeya (0.8km), Omedo (0.9km).These neighbourhoods were selected through a random sampling of neighbourhoods within two kilometer radius of river Oganaji and the open dump site (The project area). One hundred and twenty questionnaire were administered. These neighbourhoods were discovered to fall within reasonable impact range in the immediate environment. The analyses of data collected from the various sources were presented using frequency and percentage tabulation both qualitative and quantitative techniques were used in the impact assessment impact identification and predictions with the aid of the environmental evaluation system (EES) as modified by Olokesusi (1992). Findings reveals that human health were negatively impacted with 47% weight by the open dump site near river as it leads to outbreak of disease and presence of disease vectors. The research advocates the discontinued use of the open dump site, awareness campaign on proper waste disposal, and public private participation in water services.
