Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Water Sediments and Shellfish from Choba and Sama Rivers of Rivers State Nigeria
Crude oil production has led to increase in oil spill with the attendant contamination of the surrounding environment by Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) and other pollutants. When PAH enters the aquatic environment, it either mixes with water or sinks into the sediment, hence causing severe damage to benthic organisms including some shellfish. Besides sediment and water, the sampled shellfish include crab (Goniopsis cruentata) from Choba river and periwinkle(Tympanotonus fuscatus) from Sama river. Homogenizedsamples were placed into a 500ml beaker and extraction was carried out with 300ml of n – hexane using Soxhlet Extraction. Buck 530 gas chromatograph equipped with an on – column, automatic injector, Mass spectroscopy, HP 88 capillary column (100m x 0.25µm film thickness) CA, USA was used in the analysis. The result shows that Concentration of PAHs ranged from 0.3818 – 0.4682 mg/ml across the sampling points. Choba water had the higher PAH compared to Sama water.Concentration of Total PAHs in the sediments ranged from 0.4847 – 0.9714 mg/g across the sampling points. Choba sediment had the lower PAH values compared to Sama. The periwinkle concentration of total PAHs in the crab was 0.8778 mg/g and 0.5843 mg/g. Anthracene had the highest concentration of 0.3936 mg/grecorded in the periwinkle species, while Benzo(k)fluoranthene had the lowest concentration -0.0016mg/g recorded in Crab. The concentration of PAH in periwinkle ranged from 0.0166 mg/g to 0.3936 mg/g while the concentration in crab ranged from 0.0016 mg/g to 0.2518 mg/g. Benzo(b)fluoranthene in periwinkle recorded the highest factor with a value of 94.5.It is therefore necessary to mitigate the discharge of organic pollutants.
